Indexes and links between tables
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Index in a database, how an index speeds up a search and how a one-to-many relationship is implemented in a relational database.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give one drawback of adding an index to a field.
Which fields are worth indexing?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an index in a database?
Model answer
An index is a separate structure holding the values of one field in sorted order, each paired with the position of the record it came from.
- 2
Explain how an index speeds up a search.
Model answer
The database searches the small sorted index rather than reading every record, then jumps straight to the stored position of the matching rows.
- 3
Give one drawback of adding an index to a field.
Model answer
The index takes extra storage and must itself be updated on every insertion, deletion and change, which slows those operations down.
- 4
Which fields are worth indexing?
Model answer
Fields that are searched or sorted on frequently are worth indexing, particularly those used in a query condition or to join tables.
- 5
Is the primary key of a table indexed?
Model answer
Yes, a database indexes the primary key automatically, because it must check uniqueness on every insertion and look records up by it constantly.
- 6
What must happen to an index when a new record is inserted?
Model answer
The new field value has to be placed in its correct sorted position in the index along with the record's location, before the insertion is complete.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Database Systems, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
