Packets and the TCP/IP protocol stack
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Three items carried in a packet header, purpose of the time-to-live value in a packet header and held in the payload of a packet.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the three-way handshake used to open a TCP connection.
Why is a large file broken into packets before it is sent across a network?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is a large file broken into packets before it is sent across a network?
Model answer
Splitting it lets many communications interleave on the same links, means only a small piece has to be resent if something is corrupted, and stops one transfer from monopolising a link.
- 2
Name three items carried in a packet header.
Model answer
The sender's address, the recipient's address and the packet's sequence number.
- 3
What is the purpose of the time-to-live value in a packet header?
Model answer
It is reduced by one at every router, and when it reaches zero the packet is thrown away, so a packet caught in a routing loop cannot circulate for ever.
- 4
What is held in the payload of a packet?
Model answer
The payload holds the portion of the actual user data that this packet is carrying.
- 5
What is carried in a packet trailer?
Model answer
An error-checking value such as a checksum, together with a marker showing where the packet ends.
- 6
Explain how a checksum is used to detect corruption.
Model answer
The sender calculates a value from the packet's contents and includes it; the receiver recalculates the same value from what it received, and if the two differ the packet is discarded as corrupted.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Networks and Data Transmission, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
