- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Texture mapping, how ray tracing produces a realistic image and render farm.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish real-time rendering from pre-rendered animation.
What is rendering?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is a three-dimensional object represented in modelling software?
Model answer
It is represented as a mesh of polygons defined by vertices joined by edges, with the faces between them forming the visible surface.
- 2
What is texture mapping?
Model answer
It is the process of wrapping a two-dimensional image onto the surface of a model so that the surface appears to be made of brick, skin, cloth or another material.
- 3
What is rendering?
Model answer
Rendering is the calculation of the finished image from the model, taking account of the viewpoint, the shapes, the surface materials and the lighting.
- 4
Describe how ray tracing produces a realistic image.
Model answer
The path of light rays reaching the viewpoint is traced back through the scene, so reflections, refractions and shadows follow from the geometry rather than being added by hand.
- 5
Why is ray tracing expensive in processing time?
Model answer
Many rays must be followed for every pixel and each may bounce several times, so the number of calculations for one frame is enormous.
- 6
What is a render farm?
Model answer
It is a large group of networked computers that render different frames of an animation at the same time, so a sequence that would take one machine years is finished in days.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Types of Software System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
