Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a mark-up language?

    Model answer

A mark-up language annotates text with tags that describe its structure or meaning, so that other software knows how to handle each part.

  2. 2

Explain why a mark-up language is not a programming language.

    Model answer

It contains no instructions to be executed and no control of flow, so it describes data rather than telling a processor to do anything.

  3. 3

    What is a tag?

    Model answer

A tag is the marker written in angle brackets that identifies the start or the end of a piece of marked-up content.

  4. 4

What is an element in a marked-up document?

    Model answer

An element is an opening tag, the content it encloses and the matching closing tag, taken together as one unit.

  5. 5

What is an attribute in a marked-up document?

    Model answer

An attribute is a named value written inside an opening tag that gives extra information about that element, such as the address a link points to.

  6. 6

What does a document written in HTML describe?

    Model answer

HTML describes the structure of a web page, marking out its headings, paragraphs, lists, images and links.
