The Operating System
Memory protection and the backing store
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Main memory used for while programs are running, backing store and free space management.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What happens when a program attempts to access an address outside the area allocated to it?
What does the operating system do with the memory a program occupied once that program ends?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is main memory used for while programs are running?
Model answer
Main memory holds the instructions and data of every process currently loaded, because the processor can only fetch from memory and not from backing store.
- 2
What does memory protection prevent?
Model answer
Memory protection prevents a process from reading or writing addresses outside the area allocated to it, so no process can reach another's instructions or data.
- 3
Why must one process be stopped from writing into another process's memory?
Model answer
A stray write would corrupt the other program's instructions or data, making it crash or produce wrong results for a fault that was not its own.
- 4
What happens when a program attempts to access an address outside the area allocated to it?
Model answer
The attempt is detected and refused, and the operating system normally terminates the offending process rather than letting the damage occur.
- 5
How does the operating system decide where in memory to place a program that is being loaded?
Model answer
It keeps a record of which areas are free, finds a free area large enough for the program and its data, and marks that area as belonging to the new process.
- 6
What does the operating system do with the memory a program occupied once that program ends?
Model answer
The operating system marks the area as free so it can be allocated to another process, since nothing else is tracking that space.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Operating System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
