The kernel and process management
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Kernel of an operating system, three jobs performed by the kernel and time slice.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a process?
Explain how a computer with one processor appears to run several programs at the same time.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the kernel of an operating system?
Model answer
The kernel is the central part of the operating system, permanently resident in memory, that controls the processor, memory, processes and access to devices.
- 2
Why is the kernel the first part of the operating system to be loaded, and why does it stay loaded?
Model answer
Everything else depends on its services, and it must be able to respond immediately to any request or device signal without being fetched from disc.
- 3
State three jobs performed by the kernel.
Model answer
It shares the processor between processes, allocates and protects areas of memory, and controls access to peripherals and the backing store.
- 4
What is a process?
Model answer
A process is a program that has been loaded into memory and is being executed, together with the data and resources the operating system has allocated to it.
- 5
Explain how a computer with one processor appears to run several programs at the same time.
Model answer
The operating system gives each process a very short turn on the processor in rotation, and the switching is far faster than a user can perceive.
- 6
What is a time slice?
Model answer
A time slice is the fixed short period of processor time a process is allowed before the operating system takes the processor away and gives it to another.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Operating System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
