Organisation of Data: Files and Records
File access and organisation methods
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Serial file organisation, sequential file organisation and direct file access.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe sequential file organisation.
How is a record's position obtained in a direct access file?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe serial file organisation.
Model answer
In a serial file the records are placed one after another in the order they happened to arrive, with no ordering on any key.
- 2
Describe sequential file organisation.
Model answer
In a sequential file the records are held one after another in ascending order of their key field.
- 3
How does reading a sequential file differ in practice from reading a serial one?
Model answer
Both are read from the beginning, but because a sequential file is in key order a search can stop as soon as the keys have gone past the value wanted, whereas a serial file must be read right to the end.
- 4
Give a use for a serial file.
Model answer
A till file or event log is serial, recording each item as it happens, and it is sorted afterwards before being used to update a master file.
- 5
Describe direct file access.
Model answer
Direct access reaches any record without reading the records before it, because the record's position is worked out from the value of its key.
- 6
How is a record's position obtained in a direct access file?
Model answer
A calculation is applied to the key value to produce an address on the disc, so a single read fetches the record.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Organisation of Data: Files and Records, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
