Key fields and methods of access
- 3 things to know
- AS Units 1 and 2
Overview
Secondary key or index, serial access and sequential access.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must a primary key never be left empty?
How does a foreign key link two sets of records?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What makes a field the primary key of a file?
Model answer
A field is the primary key when its value identifies one record uniquely, so no two records may hold the same value in it.
- 2
Why must a primary key never be left empty?
Model answer
The key is what identifies the record, so a record with no key value cannot be found reliably or distinguished from other incomplete records.
- 3
Why would a design use a composite key?
Model answer
Because no single field is unique, two or more fields are used together to identify a record, such as a match date combined with a team name.
- 4
How does a foreign key link two sets of records?
Model answer
A foreign key is a field in one file holding the primary key value of a record in another, so following that value leads to the matching record.
- 5
A design has no naturally unique field. What is the usual solution?
Model answer
A new field is added whose value is generated automatically as each record is created, so every record receives a unique identifying number.
- 6
Why is a surname a poor choice of primary key?
Model answer
Surnames are not unique, they can be misspelled and they change, so they cannot reliably identify one record.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Practical Programming, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
