Software packages in systems analysis and specification
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Diagramming package used for during analysis, levelling of a model and requirements management package.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is levelling of a model, and how does a package support it?
What information does a data dictionary tool record about each item of data?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which kinds of software package support an analyst investigating an existing system?
Model answer
Survey and questionnaire packages, transcription tools for recorded interviews, spreadsheets for analysing the figures collected and workflow modelling packages all support the investigation.
- 2
What is a diagramming package used for during analysis?
Model answer
It is used to draw and edit the models of the system, such as data flow and entity relationship models, and to keep them tidy as understanding of the system changes.
- 3
Explain one advantage a diagramming package has over drawing a model on paper.
Model answer
A change can be made and the model redrawn immediately, so it is kept current instead of being abandoned as soon as it is out of date.
- 4
How does a modelling package check a model rather than merely draw it?
Model answer
It applies the rules of the notation and warns about faults such as a process with an input but no output, or a stored collection of data that nothing ever writes to.
- 5
What is levelling of a model, and how does a package support it?
Model answer
Levelling is breaking a high-level process down into a more detailed model beneath it, and the package links the two so that the flows into and out of the lower model must match the higher one.
- 6
What information does a data dictionary tool record about each item of data?
Model answer
It records the item's name, its data type, its size, the range of values it may take, a short description of it and every place in the system where it is used.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Software Engineering Tools and Professional Practice, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
