Open source and proprietary software
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Open source software, proprietary or closed source software and why open source does not simply mean free of charge.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name three widely used open source products.
Explain the argument that publishing source code improves security.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is open source software?
Model answer
It is software distributed with its source code under a licence that allows anyone to read it, modify it and pass it on.
- 2
What is proprietary or closed source software?
Model answer
It is software supplied only as object code under a licence that forbids copying, modification and redistribution, with the source code kept by the owner.
- 3
Explain why open source does not simply mean free of charge.
Model answer
The freedom concerned is the right to see and change the code; an open source product can be sold, and much closed software is given away at no cost.
- 4
Name three widely used open source products.
Model answer
The Linux kernel, the Apache web server and the Firefox browser are all open source.
- 5
Give three advantages of adopting open source software in a school.
Model answer
There are usually no licence fees, the software can be installed on as many machines as needed, and staff with the skill can adapt it to the school's own requirements.
- 6
Explain the argument that publishing source code improves security.
Model answer
Anyone may inspect the code, so weaknesses can be found and corrected by a large community rather than depending on one company's own testing.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Types of Software System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
