Organisation of Data: Files and Records
Master and transaction files
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Master file, transaction file and standing data.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a transaction file?
What is standing data?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a master file?
Model answer
A master file is the permanent file holding the main and up-to-date data about every entity in the system.
- 2
What is a transaction file?
Model answer
A transaction file is a temporary file collecting the changes that have arisen since the last update run, namely the additions, amendments and deletions to be applied.
- 3
What is standing data?
Model answer
Standing data is the part of a master record that rarely alters, such as a customer's name and address.
- 4
What is transient data?
Model answer
Transient data is the part of a master record that changes at each processing run, such as an account balance or a meter reading.
- 5
Why are changes gathered into a batch rather than applied one at a time?
Model answer
Applying them together means the master file is passed through once for thousands of changes, whereas one change at a time would mean reading the file over and over.
- 6
What must be true of the master file and the transaction file before a batch update begins?
Model answer
Both must be sorted into the same order on the key field, so the two can be stepped through together.
