Directory structures and file attributes
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
What is meant by a hierarchical directory structure, root directory and file path.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain what is meant by a hierarchical directory structure.
What is a subdirectory?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a directory?
Model answer
A directory is a catalogue held by the operating system listing the files it contains, along with their attributes and where their data is stored.
- 2
Explain what is meant by a hierarchical directory structure.
Model answer
Directories are arranged in levels, with a single directory at the top and every other directory contained within another, forming a tree.
- 3
What is the root directory?
Model answer
The root directory is the single directory at the top of the tree on a storage device, containing every other directory on it directly or indirectly.
- 4
What is a subdirectory?
Model answer
A subdirectory is a directory held inside another directory, used to group related files below their parent.
- 5
What is a file path?
Model answer
A file path is the sequence of directory names from a known starting point down to a file, which identifies that file unambiguously.
- 6
Explain what an absolute path specifies.
Model answer
An absolute path gives the route from the root directory to the file, so it identifies the same file whatever directory the user is currently working in.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Operating System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
