- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Full backup, incremental backup and differential backup.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a full backup?
What is a differential backup?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why must data files be backed up?
Model answer
Hardware failure, accidental deletion, corruption, theft or a malicious attack can destroy the only copy, and much of the data would be impossible or very costly to recreate.
- 2
What is a full backup?
Model answer
A full backup copies every file, whether or not it has altered since the last copy was taken.
- 3
What is an incremental backup?
Model answer
An incremental backup copies only what has changed since the previous backup of any kind, so it is quick to take but a restore needs the last full copy plus every increment taken since.
- 4
What is a differential backup?
Model answer
A differential backup copies everything that has changed since the last full backup, so each one takes longer than the last but a restore needs only the full copy and the most recent differential.
- 5
Why should a backup be held away from the building?
Model answer
A fire, flood or burglary at the site would otherwise destroy the copy along with the original, leaving nothing to restore from.
- 6
Describe the grandfather-father-son scheme of file generations.
Model answer
The two previous versions of the master file are kept alongside the current one, together with the transaction files that were used to produce each, so there are always three generations available.
Other ways to work this

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Organisation of Data: Files and Records, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
