- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Relational database, primary key and foreign key.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define a foreign key.
What goes wrong in a database where referential integrity is not enforced?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a relational database?
Model answer
One in which data is held in tables of rows and columns, with relationships between tables expressed by shared key values rather than by pointers.
- 2
Define a primary key.
Model answer
An attribute, or combination of attributes, whose value uniquely identifies each row of a table.
- 3
Define a foreign key.
Model answer
An attribute in one table whose values are the primary key of another table, which is how a relationship is represented.
- 4
What decides how many attributes a composite key must contain?
Model answer
It must contain the smallest set of attributes whose combined values are unique for every row, and no fewer.
- 5
Why is a secondary key indexed even though it is not unique?
Model answer
It is used regularly to retrieve groups of records, and an index turns that search from a scan of the whole table into a lookup.
- 6
What goes wrong in a database where referential integrity is not enforced?
Model answer
Foreign keys can point at records that were never created or have been deleted, so queries return orphaned rows or silently lose data.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Databases and Distributed Systems, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
