Practical Programming

Designing routines with pseudocode

  • 3 things to know
  • AS Units 1 and 2

Overview

Characteristics of pseudocode, three basic constructs from which any routine is built and passed to a subroutine as a parameter.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Process

How do the two forms of loop differ, why must a running total be initialised, and what separates a procedure from a function?

Key term

Name the three basic constructs from which any routine is built.

Key term

Distinguish a pre-conditioned loop from a post-conditioned loop.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What are the characteristics of pseudocode?

    Model answer

It is a structured way of writing an algorithm in plain, disciplined statements that show the logic exactly without obeying the rules of any particular programming language.

  2. 2

Why is a design written in pseudocode rather than in a programming language?

    Model answer

It lets the logic be worked out and reviewed without fighting the syntax of a language, and the same design can then be implemented in whichever language is chosen.

  3. 3

Name the three basic constructs from which any routine is built.

    Model answer

    Sequence, selection and iteration.

  4. 4

What does a selection construct do?

    Model answer

It tests a condition and chooses which of two or more sets of statements to carry out according to the result.

  5. 5

    Distinguish a pre-conditioned loop from a post-conditioned loop.

    Model answer

A pre-conditioned loop tests before each pass, so its body may run no times at all; a post-conditioned loop tests after the body, so the body always runs at least once.

  6. 6

When is a counting loop the right choice?

    Model answer

When the number of repetitions is known before the loop begins, such as processing every element of an array of a known size.
