Procedural programming
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Programming paradigm, procedural programming and how a procedural program is structured.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which three constructs control the flow of a procedural program?
Describe how a procedural program is structured.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a programming paradigm?
Model answer
A programming paradigm is a style of organising a program, defining how the code is structured and how the programmer thinks about the problem.
- 2
What is procedural programming?
Model answer
Procedural programming expresses a solution as an ordered series of instructions grouped into procedures, which are called in turn to carry out the task.
- 3
Which three constructs control the flow of a procedural program?
Model answer
Sequence, selection and repetition control the flow.
- 4
Describe how a procedural program is structured.
Model answer
A main routine calls a set of procedures and functions, each performing one part of the task, and each of those may call further subprograms below it.
- 5
Give two advantages of the procedural paradigm.
Model answer
The order of execution is easy to follow from the code, and a task broken into subprograms can be written and tested a piece at a time.
- 6
Give one drawback of the procedural paradigm on a very large program.
Model answer
Data and the routines that act on it are kept apart, so as the program grows it becomes hard to know which of many routines might change a given value.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Principles of Programming, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
