Traversal of data structures
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Traversing a data structure, how a linked list is traversed and pre-order traversal of a binary tree.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by traversing a data structure?
Why can a singly linked list not be traversed backwards?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by traversing a data structure?
Model answer
Traversing means visiting every element of the structure exactly once, in a defined order, so that each one can be processed.
- 2
Describe how a linked list is traversed.
Model answer
A current pointer is set to the head, the node it refers to is processed, the pointer is then set to that node's next field, and this repeats until the pointer becomes null.
- 3
Why can a singly linked list not be traversed backwards?
Model answer
Each node records only the location of the node after it, so nothing held in a node leads back to the one before it.
- 4
Describe a pre-order traversal of a binary tree.
Model answer
The node itself is visited first, then its left subtree is traversed, then its right subtree.
- 5
Describe an in-order traversal of a binary tree.
Model answer
The left subtree is traversed first, then the node itself is visited, then the right subtree is traversed.
- 6
Describe a post-order traversal of a binary tree.
Model answer
The left subtree is traversed first, then the right subtree, and the node itself is visited last.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Recursion, Sorting and Searching, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
