What is event-driven programming?

Key term

Name three events a program might respond to.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is event-driven programming?

    Model answer

Event-driven programming writes the code as a set of routines that are run in response to events, rather than as one fixed sequence from start to finish.

  2. 2

    What is an event?

    Model answer

An event is something that happens which the program can detect and react to, such as an action by the user, a signal from a device or the expiry of a timer.

  3. 3

Name three events a program might respond to.

    Model answer

A button being clicked, a key being pressed and a timer reaching zero are three.

  4. 4

    What is an event handler?

    Model answer

An event handler is the subprogram written to run whenever a particular event occurs on a particular object.

  5. 5

How does the flow of control in an event-driven program differ from that in a procedural one?

    Model answer

A procedural program follows the order the programmer wrote, while an event-driven program waits and runs whichever handler the next event calls for, so the order depends on the user.

  6. 6

    What is the event loop?

    Model answer

The event loop is the code that waits continuously for events to occur and passes each one to the handler registered for it.
