Key term

State two design features that make an object more stable.

Key term

Explain, in terms of the line of action of the weight, why a tilted object rights itself instead of toppling.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

When moments are taken to solve an equilibrium problem, which point is the best choice of pivot, and why?

    Model answer

A point on the line of action of an unknown force is the best choice, because that force then has zero moment about the point and the equation contains one unknown fewer.

  2. 2

A uniform beam of weight 120 N and length 4.0 m rests on supports at its two ends, with a 300 N load placed 1.0 m from the left-hand support. Calculate the force at each support.

    Model answer

Taking moments about the left support gives 4.0R = 120 × 2.0 + 300 × 1.0, so the right support provides 135 N. The two supports carry 420 N between them, so the left support provides 285 N.

  3. 3

A spanner 0.30 m long must apply a moment of 45 N m to a nut. Calculate the force needed at right angles to the handle.

    Model answer

    The force is 45 ÷ 0.30 = 150 N.

  4. 4

Why does a force applied at an angle to a spanner handle give a smaller moment than the same force applied at right angles to it?

    Model answer

The moment depends on the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force, and tilting the force reduces that distance below the length of the handle.

  5. 5

State the moment about one end of a rod of length d when a force F acts at the other end at an angle θ to the rod.

    Model answer

The moment is Fd sin θ, where F is in newtons and d in metres.

  6. 6

A uniform ladder of weight 200 N and length 5.0 m leans against a smooth vertical wall at 60° to the ground. Calculate the horizontal force the wall exerts on the ladder.

    Model answer

    Taking moments about the foot gives F × 5.0 sin 60° = 200 × 2.5 cos 60°, so the wall pushes horizontally with 57.7 N.
