Electron diffraction and the de Broglie relationship
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Electron diffraction and the de Broglie relationship.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the de Broglie relationship and define every symbol with its unit.
Describe the electron diffraction tube demonstration.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the diffraction of electrons demonstrate about matter?
Model answer
It shows that particles have a wave-like aspect, because diffraction is a wave behaviour and yet it is produced by objects known to behave as particles in other experiments.
- 2
Describe the electron diffraction tube demonstration.
Model answer
Electrons from a heated filament are accelerated through several kilovolts and directed at a very thin film of graphite. Beyond the film they strike a fluorescent screen and produce a pattern of bright concentric rings around a central spot.
- 3
Why is a pattern of rings seen rather than a pattern of separate spots?
Model answer
The graphite film is made of very many tiny crystals lying at all orientations, so for each diffraction angle there are crystals in every rotational position and the diffracted electrons fill a complete cone.
- 4
Why is graphite a suitable target for showing electron diffraction?
Model answer
The spacing between the layers of atoms in graphite is around 10⁻¹⁰ m. That is comparable with the de Broglie wavelength of an electron accelerated through a few kilovolts, so appreciable diffraction occurs.
- 5
What happens to the diameter of the rings in an electron diffraction tube when the accelerating voltage is increased?
Model answer
The rings shrink. A larger accelerating voltage gives the electrons more momentum, and greater momentum means a shorter de Broglie wavelength and a smaller diffraction angle.
- 6
State the de Broglie relationship and define every symbol with its unit.
Model answer
The relationship is p = h/λ, where p is the momentum in kilogram metres per second, h is the Planck constant in joule seconds and λ is the de Broglie wavelength in metres.
