Radiation pressure
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Radiation pressure.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a beam of light exert a force on a surface it strikes?
Why is the force on a perfect mirror twice the force on a perfectly black surface for the same incident beam?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does a beam of light exert a force on a surface it strikes?
Model answer
Each photon carries momentum, and the surface changes that momentum when it absorbs or reflects the photon. A rate of change of momentum is a force, so a steady stream of photons produces a steady force.
- 2
What momentum does a surface gain from a single photon of wavelength λ that it completely absorbs?
Model answer
It gains h/λ, the whole of the photon's momentum, in the direction the photon was travelling.
- 3
What momentum does a surface gain from a single photon of wavelength λ that it reflects straight back?
Model answer
It gains 2h/λ, because the photon's momentum is reversed rather than merely removed, so the change is twice the original value.
- 4
Why is the force on a perfect mirror twice the force on a perfectly black surface for the same incident beam?
Model answer
The mirror reverses the momentum of every photon while the black surface only removes it, so the momentum change per photon is doubled and the rate of change of momentum is doubled with it.
- 5
Derive the expression for the force on a surface that completely absorbs a beam of light of power P.
Model answer
In one second the beam delivers energy P, and a photon of energy E carries momentum E/c, so the momentum delivered per second is P/c. Force is the rate of change of momentum, so the force is F = P/c.
- 6
State the expressions for the radiation pressure on a fully absorbing surface and on a fully reflecting surface.
Model answer
For an absorbing surface the pressure is I/c and for a reflecting surface it is 2I/c, where I is the intensity of the beam in watts per square metre and c is the speed of light in metres per second.
