The Nature of Waves
Wavefronts and rays
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Wavefronts and rays.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define a ray in the context of wave propagation.
What is the angle between a ray and the wavefront it crosses?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a wavefront.
Model answer
A wavefront is a line or surface joining points of a wave that are all oscillating in phase with one another.
- 2
What is the phase relationship between any two points lying on the same wavefront?
Model answer
They are in phase, so they reach their maximum displacement at the same instant and move in the same direction at every moment.
- 3
If successive wavefronts are drawn through the crests of a wave, what is their separation?
Model answer
Their separation is one wavelength.
- 4
Define a ray in the context of wave propagation.
Model answer
A ray is a line drawn to show the direction in which the wave and its energy are travelling.
- 5
What is the angle between a ray and the wavefront it crosses?
Model answer
The ray is at right angles to the wavefront, so the angle is 90°.
- 6
What shape are the wavefronts close to a small point source in a ripple tank?
Model answer
They are circles centred on the source, and in three dimensions they would be spheres.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Nature of Waves, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
