Galactic rotation curves and dark matter
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section A
Overview
Recall questions on Galactic rotation curves and dark matter.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is actually observed for the outer parts of spiral galaxies?
Roughly what fraction of a galaxy's mass is thought to be dark matter?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a galactic rotation curve?
Model answer
A galactic rotation curve is a graph of the orbital speed of stars and gas against their distance from the centre of the galaxy.
- 2
What would the rotation curve look like if a galaxy's mass were concentrated at its centre?
Model answer
The speed would fall off as one over the square root of the distance beyond the visible bulge, in the same way that the outer planets orbit more slowly than the inner ones.
- 3
What is actually observed for the outer parts of spiral galaxies?
Model answer
The rotation curve flattens out, with stars far from the centre orbiting at roughly the same speed as those much closer in.
- 4
What name is given to the additional mass required?
Model answer
Dark matter.
- 5
Show how a flat rotation curve implies mass increasing with radius.
Model answer
Rearranging M = v²r/G with v constant gives M proportional to r, so the mass enclosed must keep growing in proportion to the radius.
- 6
Roughly what fraction of a galaxy's mass is thought to be dark matter?
Model answer
Around eighty to ninety per cent, so the visible matter is a small minority of the total.
