Key term

How is a light gate used to measure the speed of a moving trolley?

Key term

Why does a shorter interrupt card give a value closer to the instantaneous speed of a trolley?

Numbers

A card 5.0 cm long fixed to a trolley interrupts a light gate for 32 ms. Calculate the speed of the trolley.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How is a light gate used to measure the speed of a moving trolley?

    Model answer

A card of measured length fixed to the trolley interrupts the beam, and the speed is the length of the card divided by the time for which the beam is blocked.

  2. 2

Why does a shorter interrupt card give a value closer to the instantaneous speed of a trolley?

    Model answer

The reading is a mean speed over the length of the card, so a shorter card averages over a smaller part of the motion and the speed has less chance to change during the measurement.

  3. 3

How can two light gates a measured distance apart be used to find the acceleration of a trolley?

    Model answer

The speed is measured at each gate, and the acceleration is found either from the change in speed divided by the time between the gates or from v² = u² + 2ax with the measured separation.

  4. 4

A card 5.0 cm long fixed to a trolley interrupts a light gate for 32 ms. Calculate the speed of the trolley.

    Model answer

    The speed is 0.050 ÷ 0.032 = 1.56 m s⁻¹.

  5. 5

Describe how a ticker-timer is used to measure the speed of a moving object.

    Model answer

The timer prints dots on a tape attached to the object at a known fixed rate, and dividing the distance between two successive dots by the interval between them gives the mean speed over that interval.

  6. 6

A ticker-timer prints 50 dots each second. State the time interval between successive dots.

    Model answer

    The interval is 1 ÷ 50 = 0.020 s, or 20 ms.
