- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section A
Overview
Recall questions on Exponential discharge, the time constant and log graphs.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why the discharge current is always proportional to the charge still on the capacitor.
State the equation for the current during the discharge of a capacitor through a resistor.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the equation for the potential difference across a capacitor discharging through a resistor, defining every symbol with its unit.
Model answer
The equation is V = V₀e^(−t/RC), where V is the potential difference in volts at time t in seconds, V₀ is the initial potential difference in volts, R is the resistance in ohms and C is the capacitance in farads.
- 2
State the equation for the current during the discharge of a capacitor through a resistor.
Model answer
The current is I = I₀e^(−t/RC), where the initial current I₀ is equal to V₀/R.
- 3
What property of an exponential decay makes the time to fall by a given fraction the same wherever you start?
Model answer
The rate of decrease at any instant is proportional to the quantity remaining, so equal fractions are lost in equal intervals of time.
- 4
How is the time for the charge on a discharging capacitor to halve related to the time constant?
Model answer
The halving time is RC × ln 2. That is about 0.69 times the time constant.
- 5
Calculate the time constant of a 22 μF capacitor discharging through a 2.2 MΩ resistor.
Model answer
The time constant is RC = 2.2 × 10⁶ × 22 × 10⁻⁶ = 48.4 s.
- 6
A 22 μF capacitor discharges through a 2.2 MΩ resistor. Calculate the time for the potential difference across it to fall to half its initial value.
Model answer
The time constant is 48.4 s, so the halving time is 0.693 × 48.4 = 34 s.
