Resistivity, temperature and superconductivity
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Resistivity, temperature and superconductivity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the SI unit of resistivity?
Calculate the resistance of a copper wire 2.5 m long of cross-sectional area 1.5 × 10⁻⁶ m², taking ρ as 1.7 × 10⁻⁸ Ω m.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the equation relating resistance to resistivity.
Model answer
R = ρl/A, where ρ is the resistivity, l is the length and A is the cross-sectional area.
- 2
What is the SI unit of resistivity?
Model answer
The ohm metre, Ω m.
- 3
Why is resistivity a property of a material rather than of a particular conductor?
Model answer
It relates resistance to the length and cross-sectional area, so it is the same for any sample of the material at that temperature.
- 4
Calculate the resistance of a copper wire 2.5 m long of cross-sectional area 1.5 × 10⁻⁶ m², taking ρ as 1.7 × 10⁻⁸ Ω m.
Model answer
R = ρl/A = 1.7 × 10⁻⁸ × 2.5 ÷ 1.5 × 10⁻⁶ = 2.8 × 10⁻² Ω.
- 5
Explain, in terms of electrons and ions, why a metal has electrical resistance.
Model answer
Free electrons drifting through the metal collide with the vibrating positive ions of the lattice, which impedes their motion.
- 6
Why does the resistance of a metal increase with temperature?
Model answer
The ions vibrate with greater amplitude, so the free electrons collide with them more frequently and lose energy more often.
