The Nature of Waves
Phase difference between two points on a wave
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Phase difference between two points on a wave.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A wave has a wavelength of 2.4 m. Calculate the phase difference in radians between two points 0.40 m apart.
State the equation for the phase difference between two oscillations of the same frequency in terms of the time delay between them.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the phase difference between two oscillating points.
Model answer
The phase difference is the fraction of a complete cycle by which one oscillation leads or lags the other, usually expressed as an angle in degrees or radians.
- 2
What is the phase difference between two points that are described as in phase?
Model answer
It is zero, or equivalently a whole number of complete cycles. In radians that is 0 rad or any whole multiple of 2π rad.
- 3
What is the phase difference between two points that are described as in antiphase?
Model answer
It is half a cycle. In radians that is π rad, and in degrees it is 180°.
- 4
Two points on a progressive wave are exactly two wavelengths apart. State their phase difference.
Model answer
The phase difference is zero, because two whole wavelengths correspond to two complete cycles, so the points are in phase.
- 5
Two points on a progressive wave are half a wavelength apart. State their phase difference in radians.
Model answer
The phase difference is π rad, so the two points are in antiphase.
- 6
Two points on a progressive wave are a quarter of a wavelength apart. State their phase difference in radians.
Model answer
The phase difference is π/2 rad, a quarter of a complete cycle.
