Equations of motion and free fall
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on Equations of motion and free fall.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Derive x = ½(u + v)t from a velocity–time graph.
Under what condition may the equations of motion be used?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the four equations of uniformly accelerated motion in a straight line.
Model answer
v = u + at, x = ut + ½at², v² = u² + 2ax and x = ½(u + v)t.
- 2
Derive v = u + at from the definition of acceleration.
Model answer
Acceleration is the change of velocity over time, a = (v − u)/t, and rearranging gives v = u + at.
- 3
Derive x = ½(u + v)t from a velocity–time graph.
Model answer
The displacement is the area under the graph, which for uniform acceleration is a trapezium of area ½(u + v)t.
- 4
Under what condition may the equations of motion be used?
Model answer
Only when the acceleration is uniform and the motion is in a straight line.
- 5
A car accelerates uniformly from 8.0 m s⁻¹ to 20 m s⁻¹ in 6.0 s. Calculate its acceleration.
Model answer
a = (v − u)/t = (20 − 8.0) ÷ 6.0 = 2.0 m s⁻².
- 6
Calculate the distance travelled by that car during the 6.0 s.
Model answer
x = ½(u + v)t = 0.5 × (8.0 + 20) × 6.0 = 84 m.
