Newton's third law pairs and everyday forces
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on Newton's third law pairs and everyday forces.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A rocket engine fires in the vacuum of space. Explain what pushes the rocket forward.
When a car accelerates along a road, what force pushes it forwards and what is that force's third law partner?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the four features shared by any pair of Newton's third law forces.
Model answer
They are equal in magnitude, opposite in direction, of the same type, and they act on two different bodies.
- 2
Why can the two forces of a Newton's third law pair never act on the same body?
Model answer
Each force of the pair is exerted by one of the two interacting bodies on the other, so by definition one acts on each of them.
- 3
A book rests on a table. Name the Newton's third law partner of the upward contact force the table exerts on the book.
Model answer
It is the downward contact force that the book exerts on the table.
- 4
The weight of a book on a table and the contact force from the table are equal and opposite, yet they are not a Newton's third law pair. Explain why.
Model answer
Both of them act on the book rather than on two different bodies, and one is gravitational while the other is a contact force. They happen to be equal only because the book is in equilibrium.
- 5
Identify the Newton's third law pair involved when a swimmer pushes water backwards.
Model answer
The swimmer's hands push the water backwards and the water pushes the swimmer forwards with an equal force.
- 6
A rocket engine fires in the vacuum of space. Explain what pushes the rocket forward.
Model answer
The engine throws exhaust gases backwards, and by Newton's third law those gases push forwards on the rocket with an equal force. Nothing outside the rocket is needed.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Dynamics, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
