Nuclear power: the arguments for and against
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on the arguments for and against.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by decommissioning a nuclear power station?
Why is the waste from a nuclear station easier to contain than the waste from a coal station?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the main advantage of nuclear fuel in terms of energy density.
Model answer
Complete fission of uranium-235 releases about 8 × 10¹³ J per kilogram, roughly a million times the energy from the same mass of fossil fuel. A power station therefore needs only a very small mass of fuel each year.
- 2
Why is nuclear generation attractive in the context of climate change?
Model answer
Fission releases energy from the nucleus and produces no carbon dioxide at the point of generation. It therefore does not add directly to the greenhouse gases driving global warming.
- 3
Give an advantage of nuclear power over wind and solar generation.
Model answer
A reactor can run continuously at close to full output regardless of the weather or the time of day. It supplies dependable baseload power that intermittent renewable sources cannot guarantee.
- 4
Why is the waste from a nuclear station easier to contain than the waste from a coal station?
Model answer
Nuclear waste is produced in tiny volumes and stays as solid material that can be sealed and stored. A coal station discharges its waste as gases and fine particles into the atmosphere, where it cannot be recovered.
- 5
State the principal drawback associated with high-level radioactive waste.
Model answer
High-level waste remains dangerously radioactive for many thousands of years. It has to be shielded, cooled and then stored securely for far longer than any institution has ever existed.
- 6
Why does high-level waste stay hazardous for so long?
Model answer
Some fission products and the heavier actinides formed in the reactor have half-lives of thousands of years. Their activity therefore falls only very slowly, so the hazard persists over geological timescales.
