Attenuation and half-value thickness
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section B
Overview
Recall questions on Attenuation and half-value thickness.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by the attenuation of an X-ray beam?
Explain why the intensity of an X-ray beam falls exponentially with the thickness of absorber.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the attenuation of an X-ray beam?
Model answer
Attenuation is the reduction in the intensity of the beam as it passes through matter. Photons are removed from the beam by absorption and by scattering out of its path.
- 2
State the attenuation equation for a parallel X-ray beam and define every symbol with its unit.
Model answer
The equation is I = I₀ exp(−μx), where I₀ is the incident intensity in W m⁻², I the transmitted intensity in W m⁻², μ the linear attenuation coefficient in m⁻¹ and x the thickness of absorber in m.
- 3
Explain why the intensity of an X-ray beam falls exponentially with the thickness of absorber.
Model answer
Every thin layer of the absorber removes the same fraction of the photons that enter it, whatever the intensity arriving. A constant fractional loss per unit thickness is exactly the condition that produces an exponential decrease.
- 4
Name two processes by which a photon can be removed from an X-ray beam passing through tissue.
Model answer
A photon can be absorbed outright by an atomic electron in the photoelectric effect, or it can be scattered out of the beam direction in a Compton interaction with a loosely bound electron.
- 5
Define the half-value thickness of a material for a given X-ray beam.
Model answer
The half-value thickness is the thickness of that material which reduces the intensity of the beam to one half of the value entering it.
- 6
Show that the half-value thickness is given by x½ = ln 2 / μ.
Model answer
Setting I equal to half of I₀ in the attenuation equation gives 0.5 = exp(−μx½). Taking natural logarithms of both sides gives −ln 2 = −μx½, so x½ = ln 2 / μ.
