Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why is the frequency of light unchanged when it passes from air into glass?

    Model answer

Wavefronts arrive at the boundary at a rate fixed by the source, and they can neither pile up at the boundary nor be destroyed there. They must therefore leave into the glass at exactly the same rate, and that rate is the frequency.

  2. 2

What happens to the wavelength of light when it enters a medium in which it travels more slowly?

    Model answer

The wavelength decreases in the same ratio as the speed, because the frequency is unchanged and the speed is the product of frequency and wavelength.

  3. 3

State the equation relating the wavelengths of light in two media to their refractive indices, and define each symbol.

    Model answer

The equation is n₁λ₁ = n₂λ₂, where n₁ and n₂ are the refractive indices of the two media and λ₁ and λ₂ are the wavelengths in metres in those media.

  4. 4

State the equation n₁v₁ = n₂v₂ in words and define every symbol with its unit.

    Model answer

The product of the refractive index of a medium and the speed of light in that medium has the same value in every medium. Here n₁ and n₂ are the refractive indices of the two media and have no unit, and v₁ and v₂ are the speeds of light in them in metres per second.

  5. 5

Show how the relationship n₁v₁ = n₂v₂ follows from the definition n = c/v.

    Model answer

The definition gives n₁ = c/v₁ and n₂ = c/v₂, so n₁v₁ = c and n₂v₂ = c. Both products equal the speed of light in a vacuum, so they equal one another.

  6. 6

Light travels at 2.00 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹ in a medium of refractive index 1.50. Calculate the speed of light in a different medium of refractive index 1.25.

    Model answer

    Using n₁v₁ = n₂v₂ gives v₂ = (1.50 × 2.00 × 10⁸) ÷ 1.25 = 2.40 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹. Substituting back, 1.25 × 2.40 × 10⁸ = 3.00 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹ and 1.50 × 2.00 × 10⁸ = 3.00 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹, so both products give the speed of light in a vacuum.
