Ultrasound imaging
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section B
Overview
Recall questions on Ultrasound imaging.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the Doppler equation used to study blood flow with an ultrasound probe.
What is ultrasound?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is ultrasound?
Model answer
Sound of frequency above the upper limit of human hearing, that is above about 20 kHz.
- 2
How is ultrasound generated by a piezoelectric transducer?
Model answer
An alternating potential difference applied across a piezoelectric crystal makes it expand and contract at the driving frequency, producing ultrasound waves.
- 3
How is ultrasound detected by a piezoelectric transducer?
Model answer
Returning ultrasound makes the crystal vibrate, and the piezoelectric effect generates an alternating potential difference across it.
- 4
Why can the same transducer both send and receive ultrasound?
Model answer
The piezoelectric effect works in both directions, so the crystal converts electrical energy to sound and sound back to electrical energy.
- 5
What is an A-scan?
Model answer
A scan in which the reflected pulses from a single line through the body are displayed as a series of peaks against time, giving depths of the boundaries.
- 6
What is a B-scan?
Model answer
A scan in which the strength of each reflection is shown as the brightness of a spot, and many lines are combined to build a two-dimensional image.
