Damping and resonance
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on Damping and resonance.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a free oscillation?
What is damping?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a free oscillation?
Model answer
An oscillation in which a system, once displaced and released, vibrates at its own natural frequency with no external driving force.
- 2
What is damping?
Model answer
The removal of energy from an oscillating system by a resistive force, which reduces the amplitude of the oscillation with time.
- 3
What happens to the amplitude of a lightly damped oscillation over time?
Model answer
It decreases gradually with each cycle while the period stays almost unchanged.
- 4
Give two practical examples of damped oscillations.
Model answer
A pendulum swinging in air and slowly coming to rest, and a car's suspension settling after the wheel passes over a bump.
- 5
What is critical damping?
Model answer
The least damping that returns a displaced system to its equilibrium position in the shortest time without oscillating.
- 6
Why is critical damping important in vehicle suspension?
Model answer
It lets the suspension absorb a bump and return the body to its normal position quickly without the car continuing to bounce.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Vibrations, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
