Commonly confused

Pairs that lose marks when they are blurred together.

  • Magnetic flux vs Magnetic flux linkage

Magnetic flux: the product of the flux density and the perpendicular area it passes through. Magnetic flux linkage: that same quantity multiplied by the number of turns on the coil.

  • Faraday's law vs Lenz's law

Faraday's law: the rule giving the size of an induced electromotive force from the rate of change of flux linkage. Lenz's law: the rule giving its direction, that it opposes the change producing it.

  • An electromotive force induced in a moving conductor vs An electromotive force induced in a stationary coil

An electromotive force induced in a moving conductor: one produced by a conductor cutting field lines as it moves. An electromotive force induced in a stationary coil: one produced by the field through the coil changing while the coil stays still.

Questions from this topic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define magnetic flux.

    Model answer

Magnetic flux is the product of the magnetic flux density and the area at right angles to it through which the field passes.

  2. 2

Give the equation for magnetic flux and define every symbol with its unit.

    Model answer

Φ = AB cos θ, where Φ is the magnetic flux in webers, A the area in square metres, B the magnetic flux density in tesla and θ the angle between the field and the normal to the area.

  3. 3

State the unit of magnetic flux.

    Model answer

    The weber, Wb.

  4. 4

    Define the weber.

    Model answer

One weber is the magnetic flux when a flux density of one tesla passes at right angles through an area of one square metre.

  5. 5

Why does the cos θ appear in the flux equation?

    Model answer

Only the component of the field perpendicular to the area contributes, and that component is B cos θ when θ is measured from the normal.

  6. 6

What is the flux through a coil whose plane lies parallel to the field?

    Model answer

Zero, because the normal to the coil is then at ninety degrees to the field and no field lines pass through it.
