Radiation and living tissue
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section B
Overview
Recall questions on Radiation and living tissue.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which type of radiation is most hazardous as an internal source, and why?
Why is ionising radiation nonetheless used in radiotherapy?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the effect of alpha radiation on living matter.
Model answer
It is very strongly ionising but has a very short range in tissue, so it does little harm outside the body but is extremely damaging if the source is ingested or inhaled.
- 2
Describe the effect of beta radiation on living matter.
Model answer
It is moderately ionising and penetrates a few millimetres of tissue, so it can damage the skin and tissue just beneath it.
- 3
Describe the effect of gamma radiation on living matter.
Model answer
It is weakly ionising per unit length but very penetrating, so it passes through the body and can deposit energy in any organ.
- 4
Why is ionising radiation damaging to living cells?
Model answer
It ionises molecules within the cell, which can break chemical bonds and damage DNA, killing the cell or causing a mutation.
- 5
Which type of radiation is most hazardous as an external source, and why?
Model answer
Gamma radiation, because it penetrates the body and can reach internal organs, whereas alpha is stopped by the skin.
- 6
Which type of radiation is most hazardous as an internal source, and why?
Model answer
Alpha radiation, because all its energy is deposited over a very short distance within the surrounding tissue.
