Charged particle beams, velocity selectors and accelerators
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section A
Overview
Recall questions on Charged particle beams, velocity selectors and accelerators.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why do the drift tubes of a linear accelerator get longer along the machine?
Why does a velocity selector pick out one speed regardless of the mass or the charge of the particles?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the path of a beam of charged particles that enters a uniform electric field at right angles to the field.
Model answer
The path is a parabola, because the electric force is constant in size and direction and acts at right angles to the initial velocity, just as gravity does on a projectile.
- 2
How does the path of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field differ from its path in a uniform electric field?
Model answer
In a magnetic field the force is always perpendicular to the velocity, so the speed stays constant and the path is a circular arc, whereas in an electric field the force has a fixed direction, the speed changes and the path is a parabola.
- 3
State the electric force and the magnetic force acting on a charged particle in crossed electric and magnetic fields.
Model answer
The electric force is F = EQ and the magnetic force is F = Bqv, and in a velocity selector these act in opposite directions.
- 4
Derive the condition for a charged particle to pass undeflected through crossed electric and magnetic fields.
Model answer
The two forces must balance, so EQ = Bqv, and cancelling the charge gives v = E/B.
- 5
Why does a velocity selector pick out one speed regardless of the mass or the charge of the particles?
Model answer
The condition v = E/B contains neither the mass nor the charge, so any particle travelling at that speed passes straight through whatever it is made of.
- 6
A velocity selector uses an electric field of 1.2 × 10⁵ V m⁻¹ crossed with a magnetic field of 0.040 T. Calculate the speed it selects.
Model answer
Using v = E/B gives 1.2 × 10⁵ ÷ 0.040 = 3.0 × 10⁶ m s⁻¹.
