The rotating coil and the a.c. generator
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section A
Overview
Recall questions on The rotating coil and the a.c. generator.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does a generator differ in construction from a direct current motor?
At which position of the coil is the induced electromotive force greatest?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the construction of a simple alternating current generator.
Model answer
A coil of many turns is rotated in a magnetic field between the poles of a magnet, with the two ends of the coil connected through slip rings and brushes to the external circuit.
- 2
What is the purpose of the slip rings?
Model answer
They keep each end of the rotating coil connected to the same external terminal, so the output alternates as the coil turns.
- 3
How does a generator differ in construction from a direct current motor?
Model answer
The generator uses slip rings, while the motor uses a split-ring commutator that swaps the connections every half turn.
- 4
Why does rotating a coil in a magnetic field induce an electromotive force?
Model answer
The flux linkage through the coil changes continuously as it turns, and by Faraday's law a changing flux linkage induces an electromotive force.
- 5
At which position of the coil is the induced electromotive force greatest?
Model answer
When the plane of the coil lies along the field, because the sides are then cutting field lines at the greatest rate.
- 6
At which position is the induced electromotive force zero?
Model answer
When the plane of the coil is perpendicular to the field, since the sides are then moving along the field lines and cutting none.
