Light, heavy and critical damping
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on Light, heavy and critical damping.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why a pendulum swinging in air stops after a few minutes but the same pendulum in an evacuated case keeps going far longer.
What is meant by damping?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by damping?
Model answer
Damping is the action of a resistive force on an oscillating system that removes energy from the oscillation, so the amplitude falls with time.
- 2
What becomes of the energy lost by a damped oscillator?
Model answer
It is converted into internal energy in the oscillating system and its surroundings, raising their temperature very slightly.
- 3
Describe the motion of a lightly damped system.
Model answer
The system oscillates many times, with the amplitude decreasing gradually from cycle to cycle. The period is very nearly the same as the undamped period.
- 4
Describe the motion of a heavily damped system.
Model answer
The system does not oscillate. Released from a displacement, it creeps slowly back towards the equilibrium position and takes a long time to get there.
- 5
Define critical damping.
Model answer
Critical damping is the least damping that stops the system oscillating at all. The system returns to its equilibrium position in the shortest possible time without passing through it.
- 6
Why are the suspension dampers of a car designed to give close to critical damping?
Model answer
After a bump the body needs to return to its normal ride height quickly and settle there. Critical damping achieves that without letting the body bounce up and down repeatedly.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Vibrations, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
