Sign conventions and special cases of the first law
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on Sign conventions and special cases of the first law.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the first law of thermodynamics as an equation, and define every symbol with its unit.
Apply the first law to the isothermal expansion of an ideal gas.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the first law of thermodynamics as an equation, and define every symbol with its unit.
Model answer
ΔU = Q − W, where ΔU is the increase in internal energy of the system in J, Q the heat supplied to the system in J and W the work done by the system in J.
- 2
What does a negative value of Q mean?
Model answer
It means heat flows out of the system into the surroundings rather than into the system.
- 3
What does a negative value of W mean?
Model answer
It means work is done on the system by the surroundings rather than by the system on its surroundings.
- 4
What does a negative value of ΔU mean for an ideal gas?
Model answer
It means the internal energy of the gas has fallen, and since the internal energy of an ideal gas depends only on temperature, the gas has cooled.
- 5
Apply the first law to the isothermal expansion of an ideal gas.
Model answer
The temperature is constant so ΔU is zero, which gives Q = W. All the heat supplied is converted into work done by the gas.
- 6
Apply the first law to an adiabatic expansion.
Model answer
No heat enters or leaves, so Q is zero and ΔU = −W. The gas does work at the expense of its own internal energy and therefore cools.
