Lasers
Three-level and four-level laser systems
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Three-level and four-level laser systems.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must more than half of all the atoms be lifted out of the ground state before a three-level laser can work?
Name a laser that uses a three-level system.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the pumping step in a three-level laser system.
Model answer
Energy supplied from outside lifts atoms from the ground state to a short-lived level of higher energy than the upper laser level. This transition is usually broad, so a wide range of pump wavelengths can be used.
- 2
What happens to atoms that reach the topmost level of a three-level laser system?
Model answer
They lose a small amount of energy very quickly, usually as heat to the surrounding lattice rather than as light, and drop into the metastable level just below.
- 3
What is a metastable state?
Model answer
A metastable state is an excited energy level with an unusually long lifetime, of the order of milliseconds rather than the few nanoseconds typical of an excited state. Atoms therefore accumulate in it instead of decaying at once.
- 4
Between which two levels does the laser transition occur in a three-level system?
Model answer
It occurs between the metastable level and the ground state, so the ground state acts as the lower laser level.
- 5
Why must more than half of all the atoms be lifted out of the ground state before a three-level laser can work?
Model answer
The lower laser level is the ground state, and that level starts out holding essentially every atom. An inversion needs the metastable level to hold more atoms than the ground state, and since the two levels between them hold nearly all the atoms, that means over half the total.
- 6
Name a laser that uses a three-level system.
Model answer
The ruby laser, in which chromium ions in an aluminium oxide crystal are pumped by a flash tube.
