Impulse and the force–time graph
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on Impulse and the force–time graph.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the equation relating impulse to momentum and define each symbol with its unit.
In which direction does the impulse delivered to a body act?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the impulse of a force.
Model answer
Impulse is the product of a force and the time interval over which that force acts.
- 2
State the equation relating impulse to momentum and define each symbol with its unit.
Model answer
FΔt = Δp, where F is the mean force in newtons, Δt the time for which it acts in seconds and Δp the change in momentum in kg m s⁻¹.
- 3
Show that one newton second is the same as one kilogram metre per second.
Model answer
A newton is kg m s⁻², so a newton second is kg m s⁻² multiplied by s. That leaves kg m s⁻¹, the unit of momentum.
- 4
In which direction does the impulse delivered to a body act?
Model answer
Impulse is a vector and acts in the direction of the force that delivers it.
- 5
What quantity is represented by the area between a force–time graph and the time axis?
Model answer
It represents the impulse delivered, and therefore the change in momentum of the body. Where the graph is an awkward shape the area can be estimated by counting squares.
- 6
The force–time graph for a kick rises in a straight line to 900 N over 60 ms and falls in a straight line back to zero over the next 40 ms. Calculate the impulse delivered.
Model answer
The graph is a triangle of base 0.100 s and height 900 N, so the impulse is ½ × 0.100 × 900 = 45 N s.
