The semiconductor laser and its uses
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on The semiconductor laser and its uses.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does the high efficiency of a semiconductor laser matter in a portable device?
Describe how a laser reads the data on an optical disc.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What acts as the amplifying medium in a semiconductor laser?
Model answer
The thin active region at the junction of a heavily doped p-n diode, where electrons from the n-side and holes from the p-side are brought together.
- 2
How is a population inversion produced in a semiconductor laser?
Model answer
A large forward current is passed through the diode, injecting electrons into the conduction band and holes into the valence band within the junction region. The current is made big enough that more of these upper states are filled with electrons than the corresponding lower states, and that is the population inversion.
- 3
What process generates the light in a semiconductor laser?
Model answer
An electron in the conduction band recombines with a hole in the valence band and the energy released is emitted as a photon. Once a few such photons exist they stimulate further recombinations to emit identical photons.
- 4
What determines the wavelength of the light from a semiconductor laser?
Model answer
The band gap of the semiconductor used, since the photon energy is approximately equal to that gap. Choosing a different semiconductor or alloy composition changes the wavelength.
- 5
What forms the two mirrors of the cavity in a semiconductor laser?
Model answer
The cleaved end faces of the crystal itself. The refractive index of the semiconductor is high, so a useful fraction of the light is reflected at each face, and one face is left less reflective so the beam can emerge.
- 6
Give three advantages of a semiconductor laser over other types of laser.
Model answer
It is very small, it is cheap to manufacture in large numbers, and it converts a far greater fraction of the electrical energy supplied into light.
