Snell's law at a boundary between two media
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Snell's law at a boundary between two media.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a triangular prism deviate a ray of light instead of returning it parallel to its original direction?
Why does a glass prism spread white light into a spectrum?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State Snell's law in the form n₁ sin θ₁ = n₂ sin θ₂ and define every symbol.
Model answer
The law states that n₁ sin θ₁ = n₂ sin θ₂, where n₁ is the refractive index of the medium the light starts in, θ₁ is the angle between the ray and the normal in that medium, n₂ is the refractive index of the second medium and θ₂ is the angle between the ray and the normal in the second medium.
- 2
A ray in water of refractive index 1.33 meets a water–glass boundary at 40° to the normal. Calculate the angle of refraction in glass of refractive index 1.50.
Model answer
Snell's law gives sin θ₂ = (1.33 × sin 40°) ÷ 1.50 = (1.33 × 0.643) ÷ 1.50 = 0.570, so θ₂ = 34.7°. Substituting back, 1.50 × sin 34.7° = 1.50 × 0.569 = 0.854 and 1.33 × sin 40° = 0.855, so the two sides agree.
- 3
In which direction does a ray bend when it passes from water into glass?
Model answer
It bends towards the normal, because glass has the higher refractive index and light travels more slowly in it.
- 4
A ray in glass of refractive index 1.50 meets a glass–water boundary at 30° to the normal. Calculate the angle of refraction in water of refractive index 1.33.
Model answer
Snell's law gives sin θ₂ = (1.50 × sin 30°) ÷ 1.33 = 0.750 ÷ 1.33 = 0.564, so θ₂ = 34.3°. Substituting back, 1.33 × sin 34.3° = 1.33 × 0.564 = 0.750 and 1.50 × sin 30° = 0.750, so the two sides agree.
- 5
What is meant by the relative refractive index between two media?
Model answer
It is the ratio of the refractive index of the second medium to that of the first, and it equals the ratio sin θ₁ / sin θ₂ for a ray crossing from the first medium into the second.
- 6
Describe the direction of the ray that emerges from a parallel-sided glass block after entering it obliquely.
Model answer
The emergent ray is parallel to the original incident ray, but it is displaced sideways from the line the incident ray would have followed.
