Moment of inertia and angular kinematics
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section B
Overview
Recall questions on Moment of inertia and angular kinematics.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the moment of inertia of a point mass m at a perpendicular distance r from the axis.
How is the moment of inertia of a body made of several parts found?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which quantity in rotational motion plays the part that mass plays in linear motion, and what is its unit?
Model answer
The moment of inertia plays that part, since it measures how hard a body is to set spinning. It is measured in kg m².
- 2
Why does a single body have more than one moment of inertia?
Model answer
The moment of inertia depends on how far the mass lies from the axis of rotation, and a different axis puts the same mass at different distances. A value is therefore only meaningful once the axis has been stated.
- 3
State the moment of inertia of a point mass m at a perpendicular distance r from the axis.
Model answer
The moment of inertia is I = mr², with m in kg and r in m.
- 4
How is the moment of inertia of a body made of several parts found?
Model answer
The moments of inertia of the individual parts about the same axis are simply added together. Each part must be measured about that one axis for the sum to be valid.
- 5
A shot of mass 7.26 kg and radius 0.060 m is a uniform solid sphere. Calculate its moment of inertia about a diameter, given I = ⅖mr².
Model answer
I = 0.4 × 7.26 × 0.060² = 0.4 × 7.26 × 3.6 × 10⁻³ = 1.05 × 10⁻² kg m². Substituting back, 1.045 × 10⁻² ÷ (0.4 × 3.6 × 10⁻³) returns a mass of 7.26 kg.
- 6
A football of mass 0.43 kg and radius 0.11 m behaves as a thin spherical shell. Calculate its moment of inertia about a diameter, given I = ⅔mr².
Model answer
I = 0.6667 × 0.43 × 0.11² = 0.6667 × 0.43 × 0.0121 = 3.47 × 10⁻³ kg m². Substituting back, 3.469 × 10⁻³ ÷ (0.6667 × 0.0121) returns a mass of 0.43 kg.
