The energy interchange in simple harmonic motion
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on The energy interchange in simple harmonic motion.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give the kinetic energy of a simple harmonic oscillator in terms of its displacement.
Give the potential energy of a simple harmonic oscillator in terms of its displacement.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the total energy of an undamped simple harmonic oscillator in terms of its amplitude.
Model answer
The total energy is E = ½mω²A², where m is the mass in kg, ω the angular frequency in rad s⁻¹ and A the amplitude in m. For a mass on a spring this can also be written ½kA².
- 2
Give the kinetic energy of a simple harmonic oscillator in terms of its displacement.
Model answer
The kinetic energy is Eₖ = ½mω²(A² − x²), where x is the displacement from equilibrium in m.
- 3
Give the potential energy of a simple harmonic oscillator in terms of its displacement.
Model answer
The potential energy is Eₚ = ½mω²x², measured from zero at the equilibrium position.
- 4
Where in the motion is the kinetic energy a maximum?
Model answer
The kinetic energy is greatest at the equilibrium position, where the displacement is zero and the speed is ωA.
- 5
Where in the motion is the potential energy a maximum?
Model answer
The potential energy is greatest at the extremes of the motion, where the displacement equals the amplitude and the body is momentarily at rest.
- 6
Describe the shape of a graph of kinetic energy against displacement for an undamped oscillator.
Model answer
It is an inverted parabola with its maximum at zero displacement, falling to zero at plus and minus the amplitude.
