Electrostatic and Gravitational Fields of Force
Field lines, equipotentials and combining fields
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section A
Overview
Recall questions on Field lines, equipotentials and combining fields.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why can the gravitational field outside a spherical body be treated as that of a point mass?
What does the spacing of field lines represent?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why can the gravitational field outside a spherical body be treated as that of a point mass?
Model answer
Outside a spherical body the field is essentially the same as if the whole mass were concentrated at its centre.
- 2
What does the direction of a field line tell you?
Model answer
It gives the direction of the field, and so the direction of the force on a positive test charge or on a test mass, at that point.
- 3
Describe the field lines around an isolated positive point charge.
Model answer
They are radial and point outwards, away from the charge, becoming more widely spaced with distance.
- 4
Describe the field lines around an isolated negative point charge.
Model answer
They are radial and point inwards, towards the charge.
- 5
Describe the gravitational field lines around a spherical mass.
Model answer
They are radial and point inwards, towards the centre of the mass.
- 6
What does the spacing of field lines represent?
Model answer
The strength of the field: lines closer together indicate a stronger field.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Electrostatic and Gravitational Fields of Force, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
