Flux linkage in a rotating coil
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section B
Overview
Recall questions on Flux linkage in a rotating coil.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the phase relationship between the flux linkage of a rotating coil and the emf it induces.
Why is a rotating-coil generator fitted with slip rings rather than a split-ring commutator?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the magnetic flux through a flat coil placed in a uniform magnetic field.
Model answer
The magnetic flux is Φ = BA cos θ, where B is the magnetic flux density in T, A the area of the coil in m² and θ the angle between the field and the normal to the coil. Flux is measured in webers.
- 2
What is meant by the flux linkage of a coil, and in what unit is it measured?
Model answer
The flux linkage is the flux through the coil multiplied by the number of turns, NΦ. It is measured in weber-turns.
- 3
Why can the angle between the coil normal and the field be written as ωt for a coil spun at a steady rate?
Model answer
A steady rate of rotation means the angular velocity ω in rad s⁻¹ is constant, so the angle turned through in a time t is simply ωt. Timing is started from the instant the normal lies along the field.
- 4
Write the expression for the flux linkage of a flat coil of N turns and area A rotating with angular velocity ω in a uniform field of flux density B.
Model answer
The flux linkage is NΦ = BAN cos ωt, with B in T, A in m², ω in rad s⁻¹ and t in s.
- 5
Show how the equation V = ωBAN sin ωt follows from Faraday's law.
Model answer
Faraday's law gives the induced emf as minus the rate of change of flux linkage. Differentiating BAN cos ωt with respect to time gives −ωBAN sin ωt, and the two negative signs cancel to leave V = ωBAN sin ωt.
- 6
State the peak value of the emf induced in a flat coil rotating in a uniform magnetic field.
Model answer
The peak emf is V₀ = ωBAN, reached whenever the sine term equals one.
