The ideal gas equation of state and molar mass
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on The ideal gas equation of state and molar mass.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the equation of state written in terms of the number of molecules.
State how the number of moles in a sample is found from its mass.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the equation of state for an ideal gas in terms of the number of moles, and define every symbol with its unit.
Model answer
pV = nRT, where p is the pressure in Pa, V the volume in m³, n the number of moles in mol, R the molar gas constant of 8.31 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹ and T the absolute temperature in K.
- 2
State the equation of state written in terms of the number of molecules.
Model answer
pV = NkT, where N is the number of molecules and k is the Boltzmann constant of 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹.
- 3
How are the molar gas constant, the Boltzmann constant and the Avogadro constant related?
Model answer
The Boltzmann constant is the gas constant per molecule, so k = R/Nₐ. Substituting the values, 8.31 ÷ 6.02 × 10²³ gives 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹.
- 4
Why must temperature be in kelvin in the equation of state?
Model answer
The equation requires an absolute temperature measured from absolute zero. A Celsius value would make pV zero at 0 °C and negative below it, which is physically impossible.
- 5
Define the molar mass of a substance.
Model answer
The molar mass is the mass of one mole of the substance. It is usually quoted in g mol⁻¹ or in kg mol⁻¹.
- 6
How is the molar mass M related to the relative molecular mass Mᵣ?
Model answer
The molar mass in g mol⁻¹ is numerically equal to the relative molecular mass. In SI units M = Mᵣ/1000 kg mol⁻¹.
