The p–V diagram and work as an area
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on The p–V diagram and work as an area.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A process on a p–V diagram runs from left to right. What does that tell you about the work?
A process on a p–V diagram runs from right to left. What does that tell you about the work?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the area under a p–V graph represent?
Model answer
It represents the work done by the gas as its volume changes.
- 2
Why is the area needed rather than the equation W = pΔV when the pressure varies?
Model answer
W = pΔV is only valid while the pressure stays constant. When p changes, the work is the sum of many narrow p × ΔV strips, and that sum is the area beneath the curve.
- 3
State which quantity goes on each axis of a p–V diagram.
Model answer
Pressure is plotted on the vertical axis and volume on the horizontal axis.
- 4
A process on a p–V diagram runs from left to right. What does that tell you about the work?
Model answer
The volume is increasing, so the gas is expanding and is doing positive work on its surroundings.
- 5
A process on a p–V diagram runs from right to left. What does that tell you about the work?
Model answer
The volume is decreasing, so the gas is being compressed and work is being done on the gas by the surroundings.
- 6
Describe the shape of the path followed by an ideal gas expanding at constant temperature on a p–V diagram.
Model answer
It is a smooth curve falling from left to right in which p is inversely proportional to V. The curve becomes less steep as the volume increases.
